The “Tonda Gentile” hazelnuts from the Langhe, also called Langarola hazelnuts, are precious little jewels from Piedmont. In this region hazelnuts are not only a food product, but they are part of the local culture. Terra delle Nocciole - a brand of the Cascina Munot company - has joined the consortium; they grow hazelnuts and pick them at the perfect moment, i.e. when they fall off the tree.
As a matter of fact, if they are picked directly from the tree - as many foreign manufacturers actually do, like in the case of Turkish hazelnuts - they contain levels of aflatoxin that may be harmful to humans. After being picked, hazelnuts are left to naturally sun-dry for a couple of days.
They are tasty, beautiful, flavourful and ideal to use in pastries especially when paired with chocolate; but hazelnuts from the Langhe are so much more versatile than that! And they are super healthy, too. They are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and help prevent cardiovascular diseases.
